Pakistan’s military identified a major killed by an improvised explosive device in Balochistan and reported four deaths in a separate operation, as security operations continue in the southwestern province.

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing, identified the officer as Major Wajahat Waheed, 34, of Lahore. An improvised explosive device hit the force component he was leading in Shadi Kaur, within Gwadar district’s Pasni tehsil, during clearance operations, ISPR said.

In Jattakabad, Kalat district, troops killed four people during an Oct. 18 operation after an exchange of fire, the military said. ISPR called the four people terrorists and reported a large weapons and ammunition cache at the scene. The military said intelligence agencies had identified hideouts in both locations that it considered a threat to residents.

EconoTimes previously reported the major’s death and the Kalat operation. The Associated Press has described a long-running separatist insurgency in Balochistan, including attacks on security forces and civilians working on development projects.

ISPR said the military would continue sanitisation operations to eliminate any other militants found in the area.
