Paris prosecutors scheduled hearings Monday after weekend unrest led to more than 1,000 arrests in the city, while investigators examined suspected theft and looting linked to protests across France.

The Paris prosecutor’s office reported 855 arrests tied to Saturday’s demonstrations, with 557 people placed in police custody. A provisional count for Sunday’s unrest added 208 arrests and 145 custody placements as of 2 a.m. ET (06:00 UTC) Monday.

Custody was extended for 278 people as investigators examined suspected theft and looting in Paris shopping districts. The prosecutor’s office said the first detainees were being brought before prosecutors. Monday’s schedule included expedited hearings and guilty-plea proceedings for suspects who admitted the alleged offenses.

The unrest followed nationwide demonstrations over living costs and school conditions. France’s Interior Ministry reported nearly 2,400 arrests nationwide after Saturday’s protests.

Businesses also faced damage and theft during the unrest. President Emmanuel Macron pledged government support for affected merchants and said looters should reimburse what they took. The first expedited hearings were scheduled for Monday.
