In June 2017, gamers all over the world were treated to an announcement that the PlayStation 5 is coming. News regarding this next-generation console has been sparse but a recent interview given by Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida confirmed that the system is indeed in development, Express reported.
However, the CEO didn’t give a lot of details regarding the PlayStation 5. “At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware,” Yoshida said. Even though this announcement is new for the gaming community, game developers are already hard at work in creating titles that will run on this upcoming console.
Square Enix – the developers behind “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” and the “Kingdom Hearts” franchise – is reportedly looking for engineers who will handle projects for the PlayStation 5. As per the job description, the company is searching for engineers who have experience with current and next-gen consoles.
One of the most anticipated projects that Square Enix is working on is the “Avengers” game, which is currently in development. While there is no confirmation from the developers themselves that the game is coming to the PlayStation 5, the job description above is a telltale sign that this is the case.
Exciting as this news is for the gaming community, it seems that the PlayStation 5 will not hit the market anytime soon. The CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, John Kodera, said that they’re still in the process of putting up the foundation that will uphold this next-generation console.
“We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future,” Kodera said. And with the company planning to implement this business strategy in its 2020 fiscal year, the PlayStation 5 will not come out until 2021 at the very least.
As for the name of the console itself, Kodera didn’t disclose such information about the system. Although the gaming community is dubbing the upcoming system the PlayStation 5, it’s still up for debate whether Sony will adopt the name or provide the console with a different one altogether.
