“Power” was so popular that even its producers find it difficult to let go of the show. They agree that it is too good to just end in six seasons but at the same time, they cannot extend the story anymore to come up with season 7.
Expanding the drama via spinoffs
As a result, showrunner Courtney A. Kemp and executive producer 50 Cent, created a series of spinoffs. They made four stories and each one will focus on one or two most notable characters in the original “Power” series.
With regards to the expansion of the show, Kemp told Variety that she is happy to do the spinoffs because it doesn’t just offer people of color to be in the spotlight but it also allowed them to maximize employment in this time of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We didn’t know that COVID was going to happen, but I’ve been able to help people stay employed during this period, which is huge,” she added.
Spoilers as revealed by Michael Rainey
The first part of the spin-off has been titled “Power Book II: Ghost” and James “Ghost” St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick) is already dead in this story. It will now focus on his son Tariq who will do everything to get his mother Tasha out of jail. It can be recalled that she took the fall when she learned that Tariq will be suspected of his own father’s death.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Michael Rainey Jr. who plays Tariq revealed some serious spoilers. He said that his character will work hard and do everything to look out for his mom. Tariq has gone back to college and in between classes he is selling drugs to earn money.
This is the only way that he knows how to earn big bucks that he needed to save his mother Tasha (Naturi Naughton). Rainey shared that Tariq has a lot on his plate in “Power Book II: Ghost” that even him is not sure if this youngster can handle it all.
"Tariq is a lot smarter than people think he is,” he told the outlet. “He kind of has the Ghost mentality so, whatever he needs to do to help his family, to help Ma, to help Yaz, bear in mind he's going to do it.”
He added, "So whether it's selling drugs, whatever it is, Tariq is going to do it, and he's going to make sure that his family's good at the end of the day – no matter how hard it is.”
Apparently, Rainey agreed that Tariq is also becoming like his father and he thinks this is something inevitable as they are of the same blood after all. In any case, Naughton also teased that there will be more deaths in “Power Book II: Ghost” and most of them were murders.
