‘Preacher’ Season 1, Episode 2 Spoilers: “See” Introduces Villain; AMC’s New Series Pulls in 2.4 Million Viewers for Pilot

Dominic Cooper as Jesse on AMC's 'Preacher'

‘Preacher’ season 1, episode 2 will follow the adventures of Jesse and friends following Jesse’s possession of the angel-demon entity Genesis. The second episode, entitled “See”, is speculated to introduce a new villain in the mix. Meanwhile, AMC’s brand new show managed to pull in 2.4 million in viewership for its pilot episode.

According to Movie News Guide, episode 2 may introduce a brand new villain into the lineup of quirky characters that includes Dominic Cooper’s violent preacher Jesse Custer, Joseph Gilgun’s Irish vampire Cassidy, Ruth Negga’s skilled marksman Tulip O’Hare, and W. Earl Brown’s alcoholic racist Sheriff Hugo Root. The villain is speculated to come in the form of a businessman.

AMC’s hotly anticipated black comedy series based on the comic books created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon officially premiered its pilot on May 22 on AMC and was received with generally positive reviews from critics. According to Vanity Fair, top Hollywood studios have been trying to adapt Ennis and Dillon’s comic book for two decades. Eventually, it found development under Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin and proved to be successful.

Ennis admitted, “Preacher is a strange beast to begin with. Let’s face it…  Once Seth and Evan got involved, it took less than two years.”

Ennis acknowledged that mainstream audiences have been acquainted with the darker side of television shows with series such as ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘Game of Thrones’ and this may have contributed to the ease of pitching the premise for ‘Preacher’ on the network. Catlin added, “With such great television out there, to sort of grab people’s attention you need something that is new. Preacher is whatever, good, bad, or indifferent. Whether it’s a hit or a flop, or, I don’t know, it gets everyone fired, it’s unlike anything that’s been on TV before.”

According to Deadline, the series debut managed to pull in 2.4 million viewers for “Pilot” with 1.1 million among the 18-49 demographic. Although the numbers seem modest enough in comparison to the premiere of other shows, it became the second-best scripted series debut for the year 2016 just behind ‘The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story’.

‘Preacher’ is a comedy-drama and supernatural series that follows the story of a violent and wayward preacher named Jesse who is possessed by an entity called Genesis, a half-demon half-angel lovechild. The series is produced by Matt Tauber and executive produced by Rogen, Goldberg, Catlin, Ennis, Dillon, James Weaver, Jason Netter, Vivian Cannon, and Neal Moritz among others.

Season 1, episode 2 is scheduled to air on AMC on June 5.
