The Reserve Bank of Australia kept its cash rate target fixed at 4.35% following its 10–11 August 2026 meeting; the unchanged rate will take effect from 12 August. Released alongside the August Statement on Monetary Policy, this decision shows the Board's opinion that the current tight posture is still suitable as it tracks the delayed consequences of earlier rate increases on demand, employment, and prices. Headline inflation of 3.8% year-on-year in June 2026, still outside the 2–3% target range, led the RBA to give equal weight to bringing inflation back to target and maintaining full employment.
The hold suggests a deliberate waiting and seeing approach instead of any quick change toward relaxation. For the time being, the RBA thinks the current policy settings are tight enough and wants more proof of falling underlying inflation and lower employment-market stresses before it would think about cutting rates. The next planned decision is 29 September 2026, which will allow leaders more time to evaluate fresh data.
This cautious position draws attention to the central bank's dual mandate quandary: keeping high rates runs the risk of further depressing consumption, real estate activity, and employment; too early easing might let above-target inflation to become fixed. Therefore, instead of reacting to any one inflation report, the RBA's approach calls for a thorough study of both price stability and labour-market situation.
