‘Reign’ season 4’s episode 13, titled “Coup de Grace,” will follow Mary as her power over Scotland is threatened after Darnley allies with Scottish clergyman John Knox.
The lengthy synopsis for “Coup de Grace” posted on TV Guide reads, “Darnley (Will Kemp) teams up with John Knox (Jonathan Goad) to strip Mary (Adelaide Kane) of her throne, and this plot will leave a friend of Mary's dead.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth (Rachel Skarsten) must banish Gideon (Ben Geurens) from court; and Charles (Spencer McPherson) takes a bold stance against his brother Henri (Jackson Hodge-Carter).”
The upcoming episode is set to follow the Queen of Scots as she gains another enemy in her husband, Lord Darnley. The conflict between them is set to blow up as Darnley seals an alliance with John Knox to overthrow Mary from power, and this will leave one of Mary’s closest friends dead.
In the promo, Knox tells Darnley that Mary’s continued rule over Scotland will cause the realm’s destruction. Darnley then asks, “So you wanted to kill her?” In another scene, Mary looks clearly agitated as if she knew someone may be following her.
According to the recap of the previous episode posted on Entertainment Weekly, it became clearer to the people of Scotland that their queen may be incapable of ruling their realm. They began turning against her.
Darnley has been banished from court as he had been stealing money from Scotland’s emergency fund. Mary put it on herself to find her husband and retrieve the stolen money. Darnley was willing to return the funds but under the condition that he would be allowed back in court.
‘Reign’ season 4’s episode 13, titled “Coup de Grace,” is scheduled to air on The CW on May 19, 2017. It was directed by Megan Follows and written by John J. Sakmar and Kerry Lenhart. It will be followed by episode 14, titled "A Bride. A Box. A Body.,” directed by Andy Mikita and scheduled to be released on June 2.
