Austin,TX, Sept. 18, 2017 -- Food, water, hygiene and shelter for roughly 10,000 people is being distributed in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) today after arriving from Haiti just yesterday. Mission of Hope, Haiti sent the supplies on their ship, True North, this weekend to help their Caribbean neighbors still in desperate need from the impact of Hurricane Irma.
After helping those impacted by flooding in the north of Haiti, Mission of Hope, Haiti (MOH) decided to partner with Convoy of Hope to begin serving the islands of Turks and Caicos when TCI government officials formally requested help for the thousands still in desperate need. MOH and Convoy of Hope met last week with the Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands to discuss damage and relief efforts in the area.
“Our organization believes in hope for every man, woman and child in Haiti. This is an opportunity to extend that hope to our neighbors who desperately need it,” said MOH President Brad Johnson.
Haitian team members on the ground at MOH in Haiti came together last week to prep and load the supplies for delivery to TCI. Teenagers from Mission of Hope's orphanage even showed their desire to come alongside their neighboring countries in distress by assembling thousands of hygiene kits.
"When Haiti has been hit, other countries have helped us. Now is our chance to do that for others," said Macline Chery from the MOH orphanage.
Haitian Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant attended the departure of True North Saturday to show his support of Mission of Hope's effort to aid the people of TCI, many of whom are from Haiti.
Supplies are being distributed today by local churches and the Turks and Caicos Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME).
