Nigeria’s ambassador-designate Reno Omokri said Mexico consented to his appointment, a step toward a Mexico City posting President Bola Tinubu assigned him in March 2026.
Omokri said Mexican Embassy Chargé d’Affaires José Manuel Briseño Flores delivered the agrément to Ambassador Babagana Wakil in Abuja on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026. Wakil is director of protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations uses agrément for a receiving country’s consent to a proposed head of mission. Omokri also said his proposed assignment includes Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Concurrent accreditation allows an envoy to represent a country in multiple states after notification, unless a receiving country objects; Omokri did not report consent from those three governments.
Nigeria’s State House said Tinubu nominated Omokri in November 2025 and described him as a former presidential aide. In its March 6 announcement, the State House listed 65 ambassadorial postings. It assigned Omokri to Mexico City and said the Foreign Ministry had requested host-country consent for the designated envoys.
The convention treats consent and the start of an ambassador’s official functions as separate steps. A head of mission takes up those functions after presenting credentials, or after notifying the host country of arrival and presenting a true copy of the credentials, according to that country’s practice. Omokri’s account gave no date for either step.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs dates diplomatic relations with Mexico to April 14, 1976, and said the countries marked 50 years of ties on April 14, 2026. The ministry has identified trade, investment, energy and agriculture as areas for cooperation. It also cited a bilateral chamber of commerce and agricultural trade, including Nigerian hibiscus exports to Mexico.
