“Rick and Morty” Season 4 was only recently confirmed, with over 70 more episodes committed, and already the show is in jeopardy. A new, scandalous video was dug up by the far right involving the show’s co-creator Dan Harmon. In the clip, one of brains behind “Rick and Morty” is shown simulating rape and child abuse. This spells a very real threat to the production of “Rick and Morty” Season 4.
Considering that “Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn was fired over offensive tweets he sent out a decade ago, the possibility of Dan Harmon also getting axed is not negligible. This is the very real danger that a clip from his spoof show “Daryl” back in 2009 poses to “Rick and Morty” Season 4.
The video is basically the “Dexter” spoof’s attempt at dark humor by simulating rape on a baby doll, the BBC reports. At the time, the co-creator of “Rick and Morty” realized that the skit simply went too far. As a result, he took it down. Unfortunately for him, the alt-right managed to dig it up and has since shown the video to the world, putting “Rick and Morty” Season 4 in jeopardy.
Following the spread of the scandal, Harmon quit Twitter, likely in anticipation of the backlash from the public and the impact this could have on “Rick and Morty” Season 4. He has also since recognized his mistake and apologized that the video was ever made public.
"Nobody should ever have to see what you saw and for that, I sincerely apologize," Harmon said.
For its part, Adult Swim has also released a statement via TVLine and it didn’t outright say that it was firing Harmon. On its face, this is good for “Rick and Morty” Season 4. However, looking at the exact wording of the response still leaves the possibility open. If the backlash grows big enough, the studio might have no choice but to let him go.
“Dan recognized his mistake at the time and has apologized. He understands there is no place for this type of content here at Adult Swim,” the statement reads.
