Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Group of 20 (G20) foreign ministers in Atlanta to coordinate responses to geopolitical crises, tying cooperation to shared interests and an agenda that includes trade and supply chains.

A transcript of Rubio’s Oct. 30 opening remarks from the U.S. Department of State records his call for ministers to coordinate how they address crises and focus on interests they have in common. A department media note issued in May said the meeting would address global economic challenges, access to markets and supply chains able to withstand disruption.

The ministers are meeting amid disputes over Ukraine, Iran and Russia’s participation, the Associated Press and Channel NewsAsia reported. EconoTimes covered those divisions around the Atlanta talks earlier. The Associated Press also identified U.S. tariffs and China’s activity in the South China Sea as contentious issues around the meeting.

The Associated Press connected the conflicts and trade tensions around the meeting with higher global fuel costs and uncertainty for trade. South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said ministers would consider responses to geopolitical crises affecting energy, food and supply networks. Seoul said it planned to coordinate with other G20 members on global issues as South Korea prepares to take over the group’s presidency in 2028.

The United States holds the G20’s rotating presidency this year.
