U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to visit Sweden and India this week for high-level diplomatic talks focused on NATO defense spending, regional security, trade cooperation, and energy stability. The trip comes as the Trump administration continues to pressure allies to increase military contributions while also working to stabilize relations with India after recent tariff disputes.
Rubio will arrive in Helsingborg, Sweden, on May 22 to attend a meeting of NATO foreign ministers. During the summit, he is expected to emphasize the importance of greater burden sharing within the NATO alliance and call for increased defense investment from member nations. The Trump administration has consistently urged NATO countries to spend more on collective security, warning that the United States should not carry the largest share of defense costs alone.
In addition to NATO discussions, Rubio will hold meetings with representatives from the Arctic Seven nations, including Canada, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. Talks will focus on regional security, economic cooperation, and Arctic strategic interests.
Following the Sweden visit, Rubio will travel to India from May 23 to 26, making stops in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. His meetings with Indian officials will center on defense cooperation, trade negotiations, and energy security. The visit reflects ongoing efforts by Washington and New Delhi to strengthen bilateral relations despite recent tensions caused by U.S. tariffs imposed on Indian imports.
India remains a key strategic partner for the United States through the Quad alliance, which also includes Japan and Australia. Discussions are also expected to touch on supply chain security and efforts to reduce dependence on China for critical minerals.
Rubio’s visit highlights Washington’s broader strategy to reinforce alliances, improve regional stability, and expand economic partnerships across Europe and Asia.
