RALEIGH, N.C., Sept. 13, 2016 -- Today marked the official opening of the SECU Jim & Betsy Bryan Hospice Home of UNC Health Care, the first inpatient and residential hospice facility of its kind to serve patients in Chatham and its neighboring counties. The ribbon cutting gave community leaders, donors and other attendees an opportunity to view the Home’s amenities and services. During the ceremony, SECU Foundation Board Chair Jim Johnson spoke briefly, highlighting the partnership of State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) members and The Medical Foundation of North Carolina to help fund the Home’s construction.

Johnson noted, “SECU members are pleased to be part of bringing SECU Jim & Betsy Brian Hospice Home of UNC Health Care to fruition – a project that honors the vision and mission of Dr. James Bryan and UNC Hospice and enhances access to the end-of-life care choices for our State’s citizens. The Foundation’s funding for the new facility demonstrates our members’ recognition of the great need for hospice and palliative care services in Chatham and surrounding counties and certainly embodies our philosophy of helping others, also shared by Hospice and its generous community supporters.”
UNC Hospice has been serving patients and their families in Chatham, Orange, Lee, Durham and portions of Alamance and Wake counties with in-home based care for 17 years. With UNC’s strong commitment to providing hospice excellence and the critical need for expanding services for families in the region, an inpatient facility became a priority. SECU Foundation’s $1 million investment for the new Home will help the UNC medical community reach families with an alternative option for specialized care locally and a welcome reprieve to the economic and emotional hardships experienced during the final phases of a loved one’s life.
“We appreciate SECU members for their support. This is a beautiful facility with a wide range of amenities to make our patients and their families comfortable, but I believe it is our caregivers that will help make it feel like a home,” said Brian Goldstein, MD, Chief Operating Officer, UNC Health Care. “This includes a team of nurses, social workers, pastoral and grief counselors, and trained UNC Health Care volunteers with years of experience in hospice and palliative care services.”
