Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe were absent during the latest episode of “Outlander” Season 4 and fans were wondering why the showrunners decided to not include their characters. Speaking on Twitter, executive producer Toni Graphia explained their decision and the mindset behind such maneuver.
“We love J & C, but we believe that even if they are not on screen, it doesn’t mean they aren’t a part of the episode,” Graphia said through Sony’s official Twitter account. “This is their daughter, who is searching for them to save their lives. Any story about their family is also about them.” Catriona Balfe and Sam Heughan are once again nailing both their roles this installment as they deliver one memorable moment after another.
So far, the story is building up the relationship of Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) with Claire (Caitriona Balfe) acting as a buffer for their impending meeting. The previous episode saw Bree passing through the stones and exploring the dangerous land of the 18th century.
During her journey, the brief presence of Frank (Tobias Menzies) provided a lot of emotional depth to the episode and indicated that her bond with Jamie will be starting soon. But the young Fraser’s journey is fraught with dangers and it’s expected she’s going to go through some harrowing ordeal this season. Meanwhile, Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe will be returning on the eighth episode of “Outlander” Season 4 that is slated to air on Dec. 23.
Outside of the set, however, both celebrities are making appearances on several interviews as they continue to promote their time-traveling hit series. When asked what their favorite scenes so far, Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe revealed that their most favored moment was the reunion at the print shop.
Given that the scene held a lot of emotional weight and took a lot of building up leading to that moment, it’s no wonder that both actors chose it. Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe has time and again showcased their bond offset and it’s no surprise that they picked a similar scene to agree upon.
