Samsung appears poised to overcome setbacks in its quest to supply HBM3E memory to NVIDIA, aiming to establish itself in the AI accelerator market. With key milestones reportedly completed, Samsung may soon join the ranks of NVIDIA’s high-bandwidth memory suppliers.
Samsung Faces Setbacks in Securing NVIDIA as an HBM Client
A huge "business shock" befell Samsung when news broke that the company had failed to secure NVIDIA as an HBM customer, with the reason given as an indeterminate delay in the process. This led many to believe that Samsung had failed to build its position in NVIDIA's supply chain.
On the other hand, Samsung recently disclosed in its results call that it is still working on becoming an NVIDIA supplier and that it is on the correct track to provide 8-Hi HBM3E memory to a "major customer."
Samsung Remains Confident in HBM3E Supply Path
Kim Jae-jun, VP of Samsung's Memory Business Division, made some comments, although he didn't specifically call out NVIDIA. On the contrary, he said that Samsung is actively seeking to establish an HBM3E supply with a major client; experts speculate that this could be NVIDIA, given that the Korean behemoth is currently being careful with its pronouncements.
According to BusinessKorea, this is what the VP of Samsung had to say:
“Both HBM3E 8-stack and 12-stack products are being mass-produced and sold, and significant stages of the quality test process for a major customer have been completed, leading to sales expansion in the fourth quarter.
We are preparing improved HBM3E products in line with the next-generation graphics processing unit (GPU) projects of our major customer.”
NVIDIA Qualification Marks a Milestone for Samsung's HBM Ambitions
It was inevitable that Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron would be added to the list of Team Green's HBM suppliers after we revealed in an earlier report that NVIDIA has already qualified Samsung for their HBM3E process.
Initiating HBM supplies to NVIDIA would be a huge win for Samsung, according to WCCFETCH. The Korean powerhouse is aiming for the "spotlight" in the AI markets, and forming partnerships with AI behemoths like NVIDIA is the only way to do it.
Samsung's Pursuit of AI Market Leadership with HBM4 Innovation
The Korean behemoth is ready to jump on the HBM4 bandwagon early on, and Samsung appears to be confident in its next-gen HBM4 process; the company has even gone so far as to say it will probably outsource the semiconductor essentials to TSMC.
The combination of memory and semiconductors in a single package in 6th-generation HBM memory is believed to lead to substantial generational advancements in AI goods.
