U.S. President Donald Trump announced Friday that he has directed every federal agency to immediately stop using artificial intelligence technology developed by Anthropic, escalating tensions between the federal government and the leading AI company. In a post published on Truth Social, Trump stated that all government departments must cease using Anthropic’s products at once, with a six-month phase-out period granted to agencies such as the Department of Defense that currently rely on the company’s AI systems.
“I am directing EVERY Federal Agency in the United States Government to IMMEDIATELY CEASE all use of Anthropic’s technology,” Trump wrote. “We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again.” The directive signals a significant shift in federal AI policy and could have wide-ranging implications for government technology contracts and defense-related artificial intelligence initiatives.
The move comes amid an ongoing dispute between the Pentagon and Anthropic over concerns about how advanced AI systems could be deployed in military operations. While the Defense Department has increasingly explored artificial intelligence tools for national security, reports of disagreements regarding AI use in warfare appear to have intensified the conflict.
Anthropic, a major player in the AI industry known for developing advanced language models and AI safety research, did not immediately respond to requests for comment following the president’s announcement.
The decision to ban Anthropic technology across federal agencies may reshape the government’s approach to artificial intelligence partnerships, particularly as AI adoption accelerates across defense, cybersecurity, and administrative operations. Analysts say the six-month transition period will be critical for agencies currently integrating AI-driven tools into mission-critical systems.
As the debate over AI regulation, national security, and military applications continues, Trump’s order highlights growing scrutiny over how emerging technologies are developed, deployed, and governed within the United States government.
