With the rumors of various improvements in its features and specs, anticipation is high for Samsung’s upcoming flagship the Galaxy S11. But fans might have been waiting for the wrong phone because, if recent reports are to be believed, the brand’s next phone would be named the Galaxy S20.
This could mean that instead of waiting for the Galaxy S11, Galaxy S11e, and Galaxy S11+, fans should now be prepared to get their hands on the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20e, and Galaxy S20+ instead. A word of caution though, the sources of the reports is not Samsung but from two tipsters so readers better take this one with a grain of salt.
This was revealed on Twitter by known leakers @IceUniverse and @MMDDJ_, although there’s a minor difference to their respective leaks, Xdadevelopers reported. Ice Universe said that the upcoming flagship will be called “Galaxy S20” while @MMDDJ_ just mentioned “S20.”
“Galaxy S20,” IceUniverse posted on Twitter. “Next year is 2020, and 20 is a new beginning.”
Either way, it appears that Samsung won’t be following competitor Apple’s naming strategy which released the iPhone 11 after iPhone 10. Instead, it might be ditching a whole series of potential naming options from the S11 until S19.
But it might be for the best as far as branding is concerned. As Phone Arena puts it, Samsung would be “avoiding extremely clunky names in the future such as Galaxy S13 or Galaxy S18.”
Jumping to Galaxy S20 is indeed a brilliant marketing move, considering that the device will be launched in the year 2020. It ties quite nicely with what Ice Universe teased as Samsung’s “new beginning.”
Samsung wouldn’t be the first brand to do this trick. Huawei, for instance, was expected to release the Huawei P11 but it was named Huawei P20 when it came out. Huawei hasn’t looked back since then and when the next model came out, it was named P30.
Samsung might be following Huawei’s lead and models after the Galaxy S20 might be named S30 and S40. However, a more probable scenario is for the brand to follow it up with Galaxy S21, Galaxy S22, and Galaxy S23, with each model name corresponding to the year it will be released.
