Tragedy Strikes Sapelo Island: Dock Collapse Claims Lives During Cultural Festival
At least seven people died, and 20 more were missing after a dock collapse on Sapelo Island, Georgia, during a celebration of the Gullah-Geechee community, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred late Saturday afternoon, sending people into the Atlantic waters as they waited for a ferry.
Search and Rescue Efforts Underway
The U.S. Coast Guard launched an immediate search-and-rescue operation, deploying helicopters and sonar-equipped boats to find the missing. The accident left multiple injuries and the cause remains under investigation. Tyler Jones, spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, said, "We and multiple agencies are searching for survivors."
Gullah-Geechee Cultural Celebration Interrupted
The incident took place during Cultural Day, an annual event celebrating the Gullah-Geechee community—descendants of enslaved African people who have preserved much of their heritage due to their isolation on coastal islands from Georgia to North Carolina.
Sapelo Island, located about 60 miles (97 km) south of Savannah, is accessible only by boat. The collapsed dock was part of a gangway leading to the state-run ferry that transports visitors to the island, which takes around 20 minutes.
In a statement, the Georgia DNR expressed their condolences: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all involved, including the entire Sapelo Island community.”
