Shabwa’s local authority blamed the Houthis for an attack that killed 53 people and injured 200 at a training site for government security personnel Monday, as fighting intensified across Yemen.
Anonymous local authority sources told Reuters the Houthis launched three ballistic missiles while security personnel were taking part in an exercise. Shabwa is a coastal province in southern Yemen on the Gulf of Aden.
Yemen’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said an attack on the Al-Maashiq palace compound in Aden on Oct. 15 killed five security personnel and injured 16 others.
The Houthis moved in September toward areas near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Yemen’s internationally recognized government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and the Houthis have exchanged attacks since then.
Reuters traced the conflict to 2014, when Houthi forces took control of the capital, Sanaa, pushing the government south. A truce agreed in 2022 remained in place until this year, Reuters reported.
Reuters also reported that government forces began a campaign this month to retake areas held by the Houthis, with ground recovered near the strait.
