Just a few months ago, there were several clues fans have picked up to speculate that Shawn Mendes and Hailey Baldwin were an item. However, the two have denied the rumors and insisted on simply being friends. But the singer has recently retracted his statements.
The rumors that Mendes and Baldwin were dating were sparked after they arrived together at the 2018 Met Gala red carpet event. However, they both insisted later that they were just friends.
In Mendes’ recent Rolling Stone profile, he reportedly recognized that he and Baldwin were together. However, up until that interview, Mendes still did not want to “put a label on it.”
Moving on, Mendes insisted that he has no bad blood toward Baldwin especially following the surprise news of her engagement — and later marriage — with Bieber. “I texted Hailey, ‘Congratulations,’ and I really am happy for them. She’s still one of the fucking coolest people ever — she’s not just a beautiful person visually, but she’s one of the most beautiful hearts I’ve ever met,” Mendes revealed.
Rolling Stone added that Mendes was apparently holding back and was avoiding to provide more details about his brief relationship with Baldwin. Though the “Treat You Better” singer also said, “I think I’m an idiot to not, you know. . . . But you can’t control your heart.”
Meanwhile, fans may recall that Baldwin had already addressed the dating rumors linking her to Mendes. Just a few weeks after appearing together at the Met Gala, the fashion model described him as “super-lovely and a very, very nice young gentleman.” And though she admitted to hanging out with him, she insisted she was single at the time.
About a couple of months later, Baldwin will drop the “single” status following her engagement with Justin Bieber in July. News of their secret marriage will leak as early as September but they would only confirm it this month. This means that Mendes is most likely the last guy Baldwin was involved with before becoming Mrs. Bieber.
