BBC One's modern reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Baker Street detective has been so popular that it could be said it was responsible for the currently stellar careers of the show's two stars – Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes) and Martin Freeman (John Watson). But with no concrete news about the BBC aiming to produce “Sherlock” season 5 anytime soon, fans are getting worried that the show's next installment might not see the light of day.
“Sherlock” creator's Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have already expressed interest in returning to a production of “Sherlock” season 5 with the assurance that material has already been written for the upcoming installment despite its current hiatus. Unfortunately, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have expressed some hesitancy about “Sherlock” season 5's future, believing that even if the show's upcoming installment will push through, it might not be as regularly produced.
To add salt to the wound of fans anticipating “Sherlock” season 5, Gatiss and Moffat are currently in talks to produce a new “Dracula” series for BBC. Considering that the Dracula series itself is at least two to three years away from becoming broadcast-ready, Gatiss himself shares that if work on “Sherlock” season 5 overlaps with current production on “Dracula,” it too will be at least two years away from being ready for broadcast.
For now, fans will just have to be assured by the fact that Moffat and Gatiss are more than willing to return to work on “Sherlock” season 5 in the future. Should Freeman and Cumberbatch's Marvel Universe roles as Everett Ross and Doctor Strange give them some free time to return to the project, they can hopefully be onboard by then as well.
Fans hoping to see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return to television as Sherlock and Watson will have to sit tight for a bit until Gatiss and Moffat decide that they can officially announce their return to “Sherlock” season 5. Hopefully, such an announcement can happen sometime in early 2019.
