“Sherlock” season 5 might not be in the works right now but it has been repeatedly said that series creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are down to continue its tale. Several cast members have also voiced their willingness to go back to Baker Street in the past couple of years.
Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the titular protagonist, have already mentioned in an earlier interview that he is open to reprising his role. The "Dr. Strange" star told Associated Press, “I'd love to keep revisiting it - I stand by that. The idea of never playing him again is really galling.” This means that once BBC orders “Sherlock” season 5, fans can count on Cumberbatch to return to 221B Baker Street.
There was a controversy the ensued when Martin Freeman told the Telegraph that working on the show is "not fun anymore." This also sparked speculations that the actor, who is also part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, might not come back for “Sherlock” season 5.
Freeman, however, argued that his statements were taken out of context and clarified to the Daily Beast, “I’m well aware of [‘Sherlock's’] importance in my life, both professionally and personally, because I love the show. I’m a fan of the show.” This statement could be a hint that he will return in “Sherlock” season 5 as Dr. Watson in due time.
Sian Brooke has once called working for the series a “dream job.” She plays the role of Sherlock’s villainous sister, Eurus. When asked by Radio Times if she would like to return for “Sherlock” season 5, the actress said, “Hell, yes! … I miss my wig.”
Meanwhile, Eleanor Matsuura might have only appeared once in the show’s history but she could be one of the next recurring characters in the future. Luckily for fans, Matsuura confirmed she would like to return as Detective Inspector Stella Hopkins if ever Moffat and Gatiss have more plans for the character in “Sherlock” season 5.
