“Sherlock” season 5’s renewal still hangs in the air and fans are getting impatient already. There is no update or even words when it will return to production so many are already convinced that it is not coming back to BBC anymore. What’s more, it has been more than two years since the previous season aired and this timeframe is another reason why the viewers think that the show concluded with season 4.
Then again, BBC Network never released any statement about the cancellation of “Sherlock” season 5 thus, fans should not jump to conclusion. Although it is true that there is no update until now, it does not mean that the production team had abandoned the show already. There are numerous reasons as to why the series is delayed but it is not likely to be canceled considering its very good performance.
So, will it be back? While “Sherlock” season 5’s showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss admitted that BBC has not issued any renewal order yet, they said that the network is always open for their show. The former also assured that he could see themselves making more Sherlocks in the future.
“I could see us making ‘Sherlocks’ way in the future,” Moffat told Radio Times in an interview last year. “It’s not the kind of show that has to come back all the time. It can revisit. Every time Sherlock comes back it’s a reunion show.”
He added that he and Gattis have no immediate plan yet but said that he would be surprised if they will not be doing “Sherlock” season 5. He added that they may just have a longer time gap before they would be back on the set of this detective drama.
Moreover, in another interview, Mark Gattis said that they have another project with BBC and currently doing “Dracula.” He said that this new show will not allow them to work on “Sherlock” season 5 but estimated that they will need at least two years until they can do “Sherlock” again.
Meanwhile, it appears that it is not just the showrunners who are busy with other projects but the main actors of “Sherlock” season 5 are also involved in other movies or TV series. Despite the setbacks, Gattis and Moffat said that they are not ruling out the show out. They are likely to be back but just do not know when exactly it would be.
