Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a public apology on Monday after making controversial remarks about pop icon Kylie Minogue during a comedy podcast interview, drawing criticism from opposition lawmakers and women’s rights advocates. The comments quickly ignited debate across Australia, with critics arguing they were inappropriate for the nation’s leader and undermined the dignity of the prime minister’s office.

The controversy began when Albanese appeared on comedian Nikki Osborne’s podcast, where he was asked to take part in a lighthearted "marry, date or shag" game involving three Australian female celebrities. The slang term "shag" is commonly used in Australia as a vulgar reference to having sex.

Initially, Albanese declined to answer, noting that he had recently married. However, Osborne continued pressing him, asking who he would choose if his marriage were to end. Albanese responded by naming singer Kylie Minogue. When Osborne jokingly suggested that he would "marry Kylie, shag her, and date her," the prime minister replied, "All of the above."

The exchange quickly spread online, triggering criticism from political opponents and advocacy groups. Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson condemned the remarks, calling them "disrespectful to women, embarrassing to Australians, and demeaning to the office of Prime Minister." Several women’s rights organizations also voiced concerns, arguing that the comments were inappropriate given Albanese’s position as the country’s leader.

In response to the growing backlash, Albanese released a statement offering an unreserved apology.

"I apologize unequivocally for the comments," the prime minister said on Monday, acknowledging the criticism surrounding the podcast appearance.

A spokesperson for Kylie Minogue did not immediately comment on the controversy or respond to media inquiries regarding Albanese’s remarks.

Australia is well known for its relaxed and informal political culture, with public figures frequently participating in interviews that include questions about sports, entertainment, and popular culture. However, the incident highlights the fine line public officials must navigate between engaging in casual conversation and maintaining the standards expected of national leadership.

The episode has fueled wider discussion about political conduct, gender respect, and the expectations placed on elected officials during informal media appearances, making the controversy one of the most talked-about political stories in Australia this week.
