“Sherlock” season 5 is much-awaited that even if the last installment aired three years ago, fans are still looking forward to the fifth season. The last episode was aired in January 2017 so it has been more than three years since the waiting for the next stories began.
Renewal update
BBC Network has yet to make an announcement with regards to the return of “Sherlock” season 5. But unfortunately, the network is still quiet and won’t confirm a renewal. But despite this, there are indications and hints that it will push through as the story has not ended yet.
Moreover, while there is no news from BBC, “Sherlock” season 5 is still in the programming lineup of the network but apparently, its status today is “on-hiatus.” Show creators Mark Gattis and Steven Moffat also previously declared that their original plan is to do more “Sherlocks” so fans can be assured that it will be back even though it is late.
Moffat and Gatiss’ statements
Moffat and Gatiss may have stated in 2017 that they have not seriously thought about “Sherlock” season 5 yet but at that time, they were interviewed when they were both busy with a new drama. They also said that they have no plans but will definitely go for it once the opportunity comes when their projects are over.
“I haven't really thought about it,” Moffat admitted to Digital Spy. “Mark has been doing other stuff as well, so we haven't sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series."
Moffat further said that they are still very open for “Sherlock” season 5 and they are just waiting for the right timing. Apart from the showrunners, the main cast members are also busy with their individual projects like movies. Thus, the main concern right now why filming can’t begin is their schedules.
“Nobody has ever closed the door on ‘Sherlock,'” Moffat told Radio Times in an interview on the red carpet. “I would be surprised if BBC will not order for the drama to return.”
“Sherlock” season 5 may not be confirmed yet but there are rumors that it will be back in 2021.
