As Israel and the United States started a major, coordinated military attack against Iran on February 28, 2026, the geopolitical scene of the Middle East was forever changed. Called Operation Roaring Lion by Israel and Operation Epic Fury by the US, the campaign employed more than 200 fighter aircraft to hit over 500 strategic objectives, including military sites and nuclear facilities. Early in the war, the confirmed death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei dealt the most devastating blow, therefore leaving a leadership vacancy and pointing clearly towards a forced regime change supported by the Trump administration.
Under the banner of Operation True Promise IV, Iran's response was fast and multi- pronged, including constant missile strikes aimed at both Israel and US military facilities throughout the Gulf, including those in Bahrain, Qatar, and the UAE. Following Khamenei's death, Hezbollah announced total warfare, causing the conflict to quickly spread over borders and prompting the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to launch over 1,600 flights into Lebanon by early March. Iran's strategic closure of the Strait of Hormuz has essentially set off a worldwide economic crisis and spurred energy prices as the main battlefield for regional influence remains the vital maritime choke point.
Though the United Nations called for an urgent cease-fire, the war has reached its sixth day as of March 5, 2026, with no signs of de-escalation. While Tehran has started its 17th wave of ballistic missiles directed at the air defenses of Jerusalem, US-Israeli aerial assets continue to hammer Tehran. Recent Iranian strikes on Kurdish groups in Iraq and a direct hit on a US-affiliated oil tanker add even more instability to world trade. Still on high alert with Tel Aviv and several Gulf countries, the campaign is shifting from a focused tactical assault to a broader regional conflict with major global repercussions.
