“Shrek 5” is the next movie in the franchise after the “Shrek Forever After.” It was reported that it would be the last in the series, but it should be noted that it will not be a sequel but a reboot.
Rebooted film franchise
It was previously explained that it will be given a fresh story, so it will not be a continuation of the last “Shrek” movie. Rather, as a rebooted film, it will get a new theme and plot that is not like the first four movies. In other words, they will reinvent the film and offer a brand-new “Shrek 5” to the viewers.
Although it will begin again from scratch, fans can still expect all the characters to be back in “Shrek 5.” They should just be prepared for totally new scenes because, as suggested in the reports, it will feature a plot about the modern-day way of life.
“Shrek 5” has been announced in 2016 after NBCUniversal purchased DreamWorks Animation. Steve Burke, chairman of NBCUniversal, revealed plans to bring back the franchise. A few months after the announcement, it was reported that the film had been set for release in 2019.
Canceled or delayed?
Apparently, it did not happen, and even if the script has already been prepared by its new writer Michael McCullers, the production of “Shrek 5” was never set in motion, so last year’s supposed premiere did not take place. There are fears that NBCUniversal may have changed the plan and withdrew the film instead, but there are indications that the movie was only delayed.
No one can blame some fans for thinking that it was canceled because Dreamworks don’t even post updates about the movie. But then, it will still be released as Dreamwork’s boss Jeffrey Katzenberg stated before that there will be another film after the fourth.
"Before the first one was finished we talked about what the whole story of Shrek is, and each of the chapters answers questions about the first movie and gives us an insight," IGN quoted Katzenberg as saying. "Shrek 3 and 4 are going to reveal other unanswered questions and, finally, in the last chapter, we will understand how Shrek came to be in that swamp when we meet him in the first movie.”
Finally, it was posted on IMDb that “Shrek 5” is coming in 2022.
