SINGAPORE — Lee Yi Wei, 38, was charged Oct. 20 over the alleged theft of a wedding cash box at Raffles Hotel, with accounts differing on how much money it held.
CNA and The Straits Times reported that the box contained about S$1,500 in cash-filled red packets and was taken from the hotel’s Palm Ballroom on Oct. 17. The Singapore Police Force had estimated its contents at about S$2,000 in an Oct. 19 announcement.
The red packets, known as ang pows, had been collected at a wedding reception. Police said they received a theft report on Oct. 17 and arrested a suspect the next day after making inquiries and reviewing security camera images.
Lee faces one count of theft in dwelling. The offense carries up to seven years in prison and a fine upon conviction, police said.
CNA reported that Lee was remanded while investigations continue. He is due back in court Nov. 17, The Straits Times reported.
