“Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition” has reached epic download numbers on Steam, as expected from the prettier and more stable version of the award-winning game. However, it would seem that the enhanced package comes with quite a few audio problems that Bethesda is now trying to fix. Meanwhile, the release of Skyrim Remastered has allowed one 80-year old grandmother to release over 300 videos of the game on her YouTube channel.
Gamers have been reporting that the quality of the audio for the Special Edition isn’t as good as the original, Tech Times reports. Many have taken to Skyrim’s subreddit to talk about the issue, with a few players actually releasing audio files comparing both versions to show the difference. Apparently, the problem could be traced to Bethesda’s over-enthusiasm in compressing the sound files.
This was discovered by a Reddit user by the name LasurArkinshade, who was the one who posted the comparison file containing both versions of the Skyrim audio. It would appear that Bethesda chose to go with a .xwm compression format as opposed to the .wav that was used for the original version. As a result, delivery of sound quality was off.
The studio is now working to fix the issue, with Bethesda saying that they may have an update to solve the audio problems by next week. For those who aren’t really picky about audio performance, the Special Edition audio issue might not even matter that much, but it can become increasingly more noticeable when using headphones.
In lighter news, Shirley Curry is a YouTube figure living in Virginia and she has been making Let’s Play videos of Skyrim, Kotaku reports. She just released her 300th video and has over 169,000 followers. It’s a fun example of how video games have transcended more than social barriers, but also those set by age.
