Song Joong Ki, Song hye Kyo divorce: What went wrong with the ‘Descendants of the Sun’ actors’ marriage

Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo shocked the world when they announced their divorce in June. It was even more surprising because the couple has only been married for 20 months yet they are splitting up already.

Based on the reports, it was Joong Ki who filed for divorce, and his ex-wife was informed about when she arrived the next day in South Korea. The actress was overseas when her ex revealed their split to the public.

Reasons issued by the Song-Song couple

When Song Joong Ki filed for divorce from Song Hye Kyo, his official statement did not reveal the cause of their break up but rather, he said that he wants to keep it private. He also apologized to everyone for not sharing his reasons for the divorce.

“I have decided to pursue a divorce suit against Ms. Song Hye Kyo and decided not to go in-depth about the mistakes each of us made,” Atlanta Chosun quoted the actor as saying in a statement. “I apologize for the absence of personal reasons behind the divorce and hope I will be able to recover soon from the pain to show you all a good performance as an actor in the future.”

On the other hand, Song Hye Kyo’s side stated that they ended their marriage due to the difference in personalities. Her agency also asked the public not to speculate or make assumptions just because they are giving vague reasons for the split.

What went wrong with their marriage?

Prior to the day when Joong Ki filed for divorce, the rumors of break up have already been floating around for months. In fact, it was said that the couple has been living apart for nine months before the divorce papers were filed.

It was reported that since he started filming his drama - “Arthdal Chronicles,” the actor already moved out of their home and has been living with his friends. Based on the rumors, Hye Kyo does not want to have a child yet, and this could have played a big role in their separation.

The actress is also out of the country most of the time, leaving her husband at home when they are just newly-married. These issues may have gotten bigger and bigger since they could not resolve it themselves. With that said, there could be truth in the rumors that they have broken up just less than a year after their marriage in Oct. 2017.
