Sony Music announced on Wednesday, March 31, that it had acquired the entire song catalog of Paul Simon. This means the music publishing company now owns the 79-year-old American singer’s music that was created in his six decades in the business.
With the acquisition, Paul Simon joins The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Queen, and Carole in the list of music legends to be housed under Sony Music. Some of his popular musical pieces that are still being played today include “Mrs. Robinson,” “The Sound of Silence,” and Bridge Over Troubled Water."
Simon’s musical career
He was a member of Simon & Garfunkel, a duo that has released iconic songs and has been one of the best-selling groups in the 1960s. The pair had a rocky relationship, and their disagreements led to their disbandment in 1970.
After Simon went solo, he still continued to release songs that have topped the charts and have become all-time favorites. Now, with Sony Music’s purchase for the rights to own his song catalog, CNBC reported that the milestone deal will expand the company’s collection of memorable classical songs.
Simon’s extraordinary career as a solo artist offers these other tunes: "The Boxer," "Homeward Bound," "Still Crazy After All These Years," "I Am A Rock," "Graceland," "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard," "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" and many more. The terms and cost of Sony Music’s purchase deal were not revealed.
Sony Music welcomes Paul Simon
"Paul Simon is a masterful, once-in-a-lifetime songwriter whose remarkable body of work has generated an enduring influence on our culture and consciousness,” Sony’s chairman and chief executive officer, Jon Platt, said in a press release.
“From Simon and Garfunkel standards, Paul Simon's music resonates deeply as a cultural touchstone for people all over the world and to represent his indelible songs is an incredible honor for Sony Music Publishing, so with tremendous pride, I welcome Paul to our family!"
Simon also said that he is happy to bring his songs to Sony Music Publishing. And it is such a good decision too since the company is home to famous songs and artists that have continued to live on even after many decades.
