South Korean authorities told financial firms to inspect their networks after recording more than 4.4 million scanning-type access attempts from North Korea-linked IP addresses, Yonhap reported Oct. 28.
The activity began Oct. 21 and involved multiple IP addresses, according to Yonhap. The warning went to companies including cryptocurrency exchanges, which were asked to check their systems and alert officials to suspicious activity tied to the addresses.
Yonhap said the traffic could help attackers map targets before attempting a breach. Industry sources told Yonhap they knew of no resulting breach or damage.
The Straits Times described the warning as Seoul’s first official confirmation that North Korean IP addresses were involved. It also reported that Bithumb and Mirae Asset Global Investments, an asset management firm, had faced cyber incidents in South Korea since late September.
