The United Nations has given South Korea’s envoy a lead planning role for its 2027 AI governance dialogue, which aims to include countries at different levels of technological development.
In an Oct. 16 appointment letter, U.N. General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman named Jihoon Cha, South Korea’s permanent representative to the United Nations, and Mutryce Agatha Williams, Saint Kitts and Nevis’ permanent representative to the United Nations, as co-chairs.
The General Assembly established the Global Dialogue on AI Governance through a resolution adopted Aug. 26, 2025. The forum brings governments into discussions with the private sector, civil society, academia and the technical community about international cooperation on AI.
The resolution assigns preparatory duties to the co-chairs. It also addresses gaps in countries’ AI capabilities and encourages voluntary support to help developing countries participate.
The first dialogue took place in Geneva in July 2026. The U.N. expects the scientific panel’s next annual report to inform the May 3-4, 2027, session in New York.
