Holders of the Starknet token (STRK) backed a study of an independent, post-quantum Layer 1, advancing technical review while leaving the network on Ethereum for now.

StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation will conduct the work through a joint working group. Starknet remains an Ethereum Layer 2 as the study proceeds.

The vote covered research only. A network transition would return to governance for approval; voters set no date for one. The governance proposal framed an independent chain as a way to reduce reliance on Ethereum, as described in earlier coverage of the proposal.

An independent chain would need to provide data availability and operate validators itself. StarkWare plans to issue a draft white paper in November describing technical options. Findings from the group are expected over the months ahead.
