“Steven Universe: Heart of the Crystal Gem” was released on Aug. 14, 2018, and was widely acclaimed by fans and critics alike. The DVD features curated content that has varying themes which were somehow stitched together brilliantly by the showrunners to give audiences a solid storyline. The show has been such a massive success for Cartoon Network that during the SDCC in July, “Steven Universe The Movie” was announced along with a teaser trailer, OtakuArt reported.
While it may be a cartoon, show creator Rebecca Sugar managed to wrap the lighthearted feel of the artwork with a complex storyline. Themes for the show have touched upon complicated societal matters such as exploration of LGBTQ+ relationships, while also featuring standard topics like love and family. And since Sugar will spearhead “Steven Universe The Movie,” it’s safe to say that the story will follow a similar tone.
The teaser trailer didn’t give much about details on the upcoming film, only featuring Steven, several supporting characters, and what is safe to say is the villain for the movie. “Steven Universe The Movie” will undoubtedly not disappoint fans since it’s been a solid show ever since it was released back on May 2013.
The series has been critically acclaimed because of its design, music, voice acting, unique characters, the use of LGBTQ+ themes, and its expansive world-building. During its five-year run, it has earned five Annie Awards, was greenlighted for a fourth and fifth season in 2016, and now a “Steven Universe The Movie” is currently in the works.
All of these are just a testament to the storytelling abilities of Sugar and the team behind her. Sugar was the one who announced the “Steven Universe The Movie” during the SDCC alongside the voice actors of the show. It’s still unclear when the film is going to be released since the trailer only said “Coming soon to Cartoon Network.” Fans will have to keep their ear to the ground for new developments surrounding the movie.
