Linda Lavin, the celebrated star of the 1970s sitcom Alice and a Tony Award-winning Broadway performer, passed away at the age of 87. Lavin, who had a distinguished career spanning over six decades, succumbed to a battle with lung cancer on December 29 in Los Angeles.

From Broadway Stages to TV Stardom

Lavin began her illustrious career in the 1960s, making her mark in New York’s thriving musical comedy scene. She debuted in productions such as Oh, Kay! (1960), A Family Affair (1962), and On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1966). Her comedic timing and captivating stage presence earned her critical acclaim, including her first Tony nomination for Neil Simon’s Last of the Red Hot Lovers in 1970.

In 1976, Lavin transitioned to television with her breakout role in ABC’s Alice. Playing the titular starry-eyed diner waitress, she brought life to the series inspired by Martin Scorsese’s film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The sitcom ran for nine seasons, producing 202 episodes and earning Lavin two Golden Globe awards and an Emmy nomination.

Beyond Alice, Lavin continued to juggle television and Broadway, winning a Tony Award in 1987 for Broadway Bound. Her subsequent stage successes included The Diary of Anne Frank (1998) and The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife (2000), earning her additional Tony nominations.

A Legacy of Laughter and Joy

Producers Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, who worked with Lavin on Hulu’s Mid-Century Modern, expressed their grief in a heartfelt statement. “Linda was a magnificent actress, singer, and a heat-seeking missile with a joke,” they said. “More importantly, she was a beautiful soul—deep, joyful, and generous. The entire staff and crew will miss her beyond measure.”

Lavin was actively promoting her latest Netflix series, No Good Deed, earlier this month. Despite her illness, she remained committed to her craft until the very end, embodying the work ethic and passion that defined her career.
