Members of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) defected in Blue Nile state, the Sudanese army said in a claim reported by Anadolu Agency, as fighting between the forces continues.

The army and the RSF have fought since April 2023. United Nations estimates put deaths in the tens of thousands and displacement at about 13 million.

Blue Nile state has seen competing claims over territory. Anadolu reported that the RSF and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) announced they had taken Bakouri. Sudan’s army later said it regained two areas in the state.

Anadolu placed Bakouri in Geissan locality, about 70 kilometers southeast of Damazin, and reported that the army’s 13th Infantry Brigade has a base there. The brigade is part of the 4th Infantry Division. The army has also said it downed a drone coming from Ethiopia’s direction, as an earlier report on its Blue Nile operations described.
