Democrat and surgeon Adam Hamawy was projected to win New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District, a contest for an open seat that drew attention to his Gaza medical missions and health care platform.
The New Jersey Monitor reported that the Associated Press projected Hamawy as the winner Tuesday, Nov. 3. Hamawy sought the seat after Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman’s retirement, the Monitor reported.
New Jersey’s official candidate list names Hamawy, a Democrat, and Republican Gregg Mele in the district. The seat includes portions of Mercer, Middlesex, Somerset and Union counties.
Hamawy’s campaign biography describes his Army trauma surgery work in Iraq and trips to Gaza to provide medical care in 2024 and 2025. It says his family moved to New Jersey when he was seven months old and that he grew up in Plainfield and Old Bridge.
His campaign platform backs Medicare for All, federal negotiation of prescription drug prices and paid family and medical leave. It also calls for ending wars and cutting U.S. military assistance to countries it says commit serious human rights violations, including Israel. Hamawy wrote on his campaign priorities page: “In the richest country in the history of the world, we should be paying for healthcare, not bombs.”
EconoTimes previously included Hamawy among physicians seeking congressional seats in its report on doctors running for Congress.
New Jersey’s Division of Elections says it does not post running results on election night and directs readers to county websites for results.
