Swiss aviation company Swissport is seeking to tap blockchain technology to enhance the efficiency of its operations, AirCargoNews reported.
The airport ground and cargo handling services provider is launching a blockchain pilot with Olam, a not-for-profit foundation aimed at developing an open-source platform for supply chain partners.
“Thinking beyond traditional messaging, blockchain could eventually become the new standard allowing us to overcome the chronic lack of transparency, which is typical for fragmented supply chains,” Hendrik Leyssens, head of global cargo operations at Swissport, said. “Blockchain could speed up transactions, enhance transaction security and at the same time unlock cost savings.”
In addition, Swissport is collaborating with blockchain-based travel distribution platform Winding Tree to bring the technology to its passenger services business. Initial focus would be on the distribution classic ancillary travel services to independent travelers.
“Blockchain allows us to reimagine how we work with our partners in the complex aviation and logistics ecosystem,” says Florian Eggenschwiler, who oversees Swissport’s innovation unit. “We expect to see lasting benefits from this technology for fragmented global industries like aviation services and supply chain. It will likely change how service providers, clients and partners will transact with each other.
Winding Tree is already working with German airline Lufthansa and Air New Zealand. Swissport will be the Swiss startup’s launch partner for ancillary ground travel services.
