Türkiye's Foreign Ministry said Nov. 6 that consent remains pending for a French-flagged vessel's planned marine research linked to cable installation in waters Ankara says fall within its continental shelf.
The ministry called the work “unlawful.” It said Türkiye notified the United Nations of the shelf’s outer limits on March 18, 2020.
Türkiye also said it had canceled navigational warnings issued by Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration over the plans. The ministry said consent is required under established principles of international maritime law for the portion of the planned activity that Ankara places within its continental shelf.
The ministry said Türkiye intended to protect its rights while keeping regional dialogue and coordination going.
