Taiwan is preparing for heavy rain and rough seas as Typhoon Champi approaches; the Executive Yuan, citing the Central Weather Administration (CWA), said the storm was expected to pass closest on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23-24.

The CWA forecast showers in Taipei beginning at 6 a.m. ET Wednesday (10:00 UTC; 6 p.m. Taiwan time) and continuing through Thursday. It put the city’s high at 24 degrees Celsius Thursday, down from 30 degrees Celsius Wednesday afternoon.

The Executive Yuan said the storm’s outer circulation could meet strengthening northeasterly winds, increasing the risk of local heavy rain in northern and northeastern Taiwan, including Yilan and Hualien. It said Champi’s turn and track remained uncertain. The timing adds detail to an earlier forecast of rain and wind risks in Taiwan.

The National Fire Agency (NFA) projected waves of up to 6 meters along northern and northeastern coasts from Thursday morning into Friday in ET, corresponding to late Thursday through early Saturday in Taiwan.

The Fisheries and Fishing Port Affairs Management Office, New Taipei City Government, said crab boats had begun returning to port. The office postponed the Saturday, Oct. 24, Wanli Crab promotional sale at Yehliu Fishing Harbor and suspended the harbor’s live-crab market through Monday, Oct. 26. It said a new sale date depends on improved weather.
