The Rio de Janeiro state government said 10 people died after a car entered a lake in rural Barra Mansa on Saturday night, Nov. 7, including five children and five adults.

Diário do Vale reported that the lake is along Estrada Fazenda Santa Catarina in Ataulfo de Paiva, a rural locality of Barra Mansa. Barra Mansa lies in southeastern Brazil.

The government's public count did not give individual ages. Early accounts varied: UOL initially reported four children and six adults, while Foco Regional's first report described six children, including a baby.

The state government said about 30 firefighters from five units responded, with 10 vehicles, a boat and two divers. All 10 occupants had died before rescue teams brought them out of the vehicle.

Foco Regional reported that by Sunday afternoon, five victims had been identified at the Volta Redonda Institute of Legal Medicine. Authorities have not announced what caused the car to enter the lake.
