Tennessee officials plan to rename Nashville International Airport in honor of country music legend Dolly Parton, who died earlier this week at age 80 in Nashville.
The proposed name change follows a social media campaign launched by Parton’s fans, who urged state officials to commemorate the singer’s extraordinary career and deep connection to Tennessee. Governor Bill Lee discussed the proposal with Parton’s team this week, according to statements from his office and the airport.
“Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state,” Lee said.
The governor added that Nashville International Airport serves as a gateway where Tennessee welcomes visitors from around the world, making it an appropriate place to celebrate Parton’s lasting legacy of music, generosity, faith and kindness.
The Metro Nashville Airport Authority is expected to consider the renaming proposal during a meeting scheduled for September 17. Officials will also review the authority’s existing naming policy, which currently prevents airport property from being named after someone who has been deceased for less than two years, according to The New York Times.
Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee, and spent her childhood in a one-room cabin in nearby Locust Ridge. Her musical talent emerged at an early age, and by 13 she was performing at Nashville’s famous Grand Ole Opry.
After graduating from high school, Parton moved to Nashville to pursue music professionally, eventually becoming one of country music’s most influential and commercially successful performers.
Her extensive catalog includes enduring hits such as “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You.” Over her decades-long career, Parton sold more than 100 million records worldwide, establishing herself as one of the best-selling female recording artists in history.
She also earned 11 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, while becoming widely recognized for her philanthropy and contributions to Tennessee.
If approved, renaming Nashville International Airport after Dolly Parton would create a prominent and permanent tribute to one of the state’s most celebrated cultural figures.
