Tesla Inc. will have to recall 53,822 units of its self-driving electric vehicles in the United States. The affected models are those fitted with the beta version of its Full Self-Driving software.
Based on the recall notice posted by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), some models conduct "rolling stops" and fail to fully stop at some road intersections, which is very dangerous and clearly poses a safety risk. It is also possible for the vehicle to totally ignore the stop sign and continue to travel without stopping at all.
As reported by Reuters, Tesla recalls the Model S and Model X (2016-2022), Model Y units with model years from 2020 to 2022, and the Model 3 with model years 2017 to 2022. The NHTSA said the EVs' "rolling stop" functionality is the main reason for the recall.
To fix the issue, Tesla will be carrying out an over-the-air (OTA) software update, and the rolling stop feature will be disabled in the process. The remedy will be free of charge, so owners can simply bring their vehicles to authorized dealers and Tesla centers for the needed repairs.
In January, Tesla's beta version of its driver-assist technology was updated, and after the process, the system issued a message that reads: "In this profile, your Tesla will have a smaller follow distance, perform more frequent speed lane changes, will not exit passing lanes and may perform rolling stops."
Fox Business reported that the Full Self-Driving software was installed in some Tesla models after their owners had opted in and subsequently been approved to participate in the test. It was added that a less capable version of the said software is also available at the company for $12,000, and its installation is only optional.
Meanwhile, as of Jan. 27, Tesla Inc. has not yet received any report of crashes, injuries, or fatalities due to the "rolling stops" issue. Furthermore, the company is not aware of any incidents related to the recall.
All owners of the affected vehicle models will be contacted by Tesla through the mail by Mar. 28. They may also directly contact the EV maker's customer service at 1-877-798-3752 and indicate the company's number for this recall which is SB-22-00-001.
