Red (James Spader) is still in federal prison when the show returns with “The Blacklist” season 6 episode 5 next week. But he could be closing in on finding the truth about Liz’s (Megan Boone) betrayal.
The NBC’s crime thriller series has taken a break this week. But when it comes back with “The Blacklist” season 6 episode 5, things are likely escalating fast in the cat-and-mouse chase of Red and Liz. To recap, Red was arrested earlier when someone called the police on him. The caller was soon revealed to be Liz.
Red gets a visitor in prison in “The Blacklist” season 6 episode 5 promo video to whom he reveals, “There’s a recording of the person who tipped off the cop.” The preview suggests it was Dembe (Hisham Tawfiq) that Red was talking with. Later, Liz is also seen panicking about the same recorded phone call.
The “The Blacklist” season 6 episode 5 synopsis indicates Dembe visits Red to offer him some advice. A couple of teaser photos also show Red is delighted to see Dembe and whatever Dembe tells him could help Red to look at the right direction in finding out who betrayed him.
Even though Liz was the first person Red asked to find out who had him arrested, he has other people who can genuinely help him like Dembe. So it is highly possible that Red would be having access to the recording in question in “The Blacklist” season 6 episode 5 even if Liz attempts to keep it from Red.
There are some clues from the “The Blacklist” season 6 episode 5 preview that hints Red will gain access to the phone recording. First, Liz is obviously panicking while talking to someone as she knows the recording will ultimately prove it was her who called the cops on Red.
In the same promo video for “The Blacklist” season 6 episode 5, Liz visits Red in prison and directly asks him, “Have you heard the recording?” Fans notice that Liz’s voice is breaking and a teaser photo shows her with tears while talking to Red. He then reacts with a combined look of sadness, concern, and disappointment on his face that the viewers think is a sign he already knows what’s going on.

Showrunner Jon Bokenkamp previously said Red did not really know who betrayed him. This could be true for the first episodes of “The Blacklist” season 6. But it would be so out of character if Red would not find out the truth anytime soon. “The Blacklist” season 6 episode 5 will air on Friday, Feb. 1, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
