Tokyo-based Think of Things shop and cafe is offering high-functional cardboard boxes dubbed CARTON 2.0 that are waterproof enough to contain liquid inside called CARTON 2.0.
A joint project with IZAK, a company that prioritizes cardboard box development based on functionality, the medium-sized archive box is made with PET aluminized polyester film “Cool Dan” from IZAK for the lining on the cardboard.
The film and the air-layers on the cardboard surfaces add the cooling, water, and moisture-proof effects to this box. The film doesn’t produce dioxins when heated.
The cooling and waterproofed materials are environmentally friendly and particularly used for the transportation of fisheries and refrigerated goods.
Although it is a cardboard box, it can protect its contents from humidity and has cooling effects.
The possible uses of these boxes go beyond what we think of with usual cardboard boxes. It is perfect for storing and protecting important files, clothing, and even food for its cooling effect and functions as a laundry box or even a planter box.
The unique structural design does away with using glue. Instead, one cardboard tightly folds into a box with no space in between.
However, this is not a permanently waterproofed product as the possible pinholes on the surface could become gradually permeable.
The Carton 2.0 Archive boxes are available from THINK OF THINGS locations in Japan.
