Many parents send their young adults off to college hoping for good grades and a degree at the end of their stay. Unfortunately, some students that are now on their own for the first time, start to experiment with drugs or underage drinking. One common problem is the use of the drug Adderall, a recent study by Johns Hopkins states that the drug is on the rise among young adults.
According to the addiction news article researchers find more non-medical use and emergency room visits among adults, even though there has not been a rise in prescriptions for the stimulant. Parents want to know what is Adderall, or what is Adderall used for? It can help increase the individual the ability to pay attention, stay focused on a particular activity. Study co-author Ramin Mojtabai, a professor of mental health at the Bloomberg School, says there needs to be more education for young adults on the risks of Adderall. "Many of these college students think stimulants like Adderall are harmless study aids," he says. "But there can be serious health risks and they need to be more aware."
Adderall abuse withdrawal reactions happen often, especially if the drug is used in high doses, or if the medication has been used for a long period of time. In such cases, Adderall withdrawal symptoms can include, sleep problems, severe tiredness, and mental/mood changes such as depression. Adderall can provide relief for some who may need the drug, and does help many people, but this medication can sometimes cause addiction. These risks are even greater if the student has a substance use disorder like the overuse of prescriptions or an addiction to drugs/alcohol.
