Factories with annual output of at least ₹500 crore generated 62.07% of India’s registered manufacturing output in FY 2024-25 despite representing 3.57% of operating units, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) said in detailed results. The ministry’s Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) also found that this group represented 60.96% of net value added and 62.86% of fixed capital, while accounting for 44.47% of total emoluments and 30.72% of persons engaged.

Factories in annual-output bands up to ₹10 crore accounted for 52.36% of operating units. Together, those bands generated 1.92% of gross output and 2.12% of net value added; the percentages combine multiple bands in the ministry’s table.

The ASI also classifies factories by plant and machinery value, a separate measure from annual output. Units with ₹10 crore or more in plant and machinery represented 15.84% of operating factories and 76.82% of gross output. Those with up to ₹5 crore accounted for 78.69% of factories and 19.24% of output. Their respective shares of net value added were 78.07% and 17.61%.

MoSPI said the manufacturing corporate sector accounts for more than 89% of manufacturing gross value added (GVA). In FY 2024-25, GVA in that segment rose 9.28% year over year, while factories in operation increased 3.45% and persons engaged grew 7.57%. Separately, MoSPI reported 2.25% growth in GVA per person engaged.

The survey’s reference period ran from April 2024 through March 2025; MoSPI published the detailed results Nov. 4. The sample survey covers registered factories and specified other establishments. Because the ASI covers registered factories and specified other establishments, its figures do not describe all manufacturing activity.

A 2022-23 National Statistics Office (NSO) study found factories with more than 200 workers generated 72.4% of factory GVA, according to EconoTimes’ earlier coverage of the workforce-based findings. That study uses a different year and groups factories by workforce size, so its figures measure a different division of the sector.
