‘This is Us’ season 1’s episode 11, titled “The Right Thing to Do,” is set to follow the events after Toby’s shocking heart attack after reconciling with girlfriend Chrissy during Christmas celebrations.
The synopsis for “The Right Thing to Do” posted on TV Guide reads, “Kate (Chrissy Metz) struggles to cope during the aftermath of Toby's (Chris Sullivan) heart attack;
William (Ron Cephas Jones) and Jesse (Denis O’Hare) grow closer, forcing Randall (Sterling K. Brown) to become accustomed to their relationship; and Olivia (Janet Montgomery) unexpectedly resurfaces.
In the past, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) seek an affordable home in light of the news they'll be having triplets.”
The incoming episode is set to address the cliffhanger from episode 10’s final moments. According to the recap of “Last Christmas” posted on Heavy, Toby flew all the way from New York to Randall’s home to surprise Kate and make amends. He tells her, “Kate, I am here to take the steps in overcoming our insanity one last time, for both of us, because it’s Christmas and because we’re good together.”
Toby and Kate ended their relationship because of Kate’s desire to focus on her weight since she didn’t think it was possible to go for her goal dating someone who wasn’t on a diet with her. She decided to spend the holidays with her family in New Jersey unaware that Toby booked a last-minute flight to be with her.
Although Toby and Kate eventually got back together, Toby collapsed and was immediately rushed to a hospital to undergo surgery. His heart monitor was heard beeping but the show cut to the credits before it flat-lined. His survival on the operating table remains unknown.
Sullivan remained secretive on details of his character’s fate in recent interviews. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Sullivan admitted that he already knew of Toby’s impending heart attack saying that creator Dan Fogelman and the writing team keep actors advised about plot lines.
When asked for reassurance on Toby’s survival, Sullivan replied, “I mean I sure hope so. I guess we’ll find out.” The 36-year old actor and musician continued, “It’s definitely going to keep people on their toes for a few weeks while we take a break. It was shocking. It’s a difficult thing to have to watch your character -- who I’ve come to love and enjoy playing -- have to go through something like that.”
‘This Is Us’ season 1’s episode 11, titled "The Right Thing to Do," is scheduled to air on NBC on January 10, 2017. It will be followed by episode 12, titled "The Big Day," scheduled for January 17.
