‘Tomb Raider’ reboot lands a March 2018 schedule and is set to feature Alicia Vikander in the lead role as a young Lara Croft. The film’s release date reportedly displaces DC’s planned standalone film ‘The Flash’ starring Ezra Miller as the titular superhero.
According to Variety, director Roar Uthaug’s upcoming reboot of the popular ‘Tomb Raider’ cinematic series finally announced its big screen premiere for March 16, 2018. Alicia Vikander is set to play the iconic Lara Croft, the series main protagonist.
The March 2018 slot was originally reserved for an untitled DC film speculated to be Rick Famuyiwa’s ‘The Flash’ starring Ezra Miller in the lead role, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Lara Croft was first introduced to mainstream audiences in Simon West’s ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ released in the summer of 2001. The character was first portrayed by Angelina Jolie. The original live-action adaptation of the popular video game series received generally negative reviews.
It earned $274.7 million in the box office against a $115 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. It became the highest-grossing film on its opening weekend. Although 'Tomb Raider' was a bomb among critics, Jolie’s performance was praised and she went on to reprise her role in the 2003 sequel ‘Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life’.
Vikander is set to take over Jolie’s role as the famous archaeologist-adventurer, who explores ancient tombs and ruins around the globe. The 27-year old Swedish actress made her film debut on the Swedish drama ‘Pure’, for which she won the Guldbagge Award for Best Actress. She went on to earn international recognition for her work in Joe Wright’s ‘Anna Karenina’ and Nikolaj Arcel’s ‘A Royal Affair’.
She achieved more accolades for her roles on James Kent’s ‘Testament of Youth’ and Alex Garland’s ‘Ex Machina’ before finally winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress on Tom Hooper’s ‘The Danish Girl’. She is set to appear on the upcoming films ‘Jason Bourne’, ‘The Light Between the Oceans’, and ‘Tulip Fever’.
‘Tomb Raider’ is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film directed by Roar Uthaug and written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet. It will follow the origin story of a young Lara Croft as she takes on her first archeological expedition.
